House Dems silence Steve Scalise’s powerful testimony on gun control, inadvertently make it go viral

An attempt by congressional Democrats to exclude congressman Steve Scalise from a House Judiciary Committee hearing held this week on their radical new gun control legislation has backfired.

Thanks to the Democrats’ stubborn unwillingness to allow Scalise, the survivor of a mass shooting, a chance to testify, a written copy of his testimonial originally shared with Fox News has gone viral.

Scalise released the written testimony Wednesday afternoon, along with a note explaining what had happened: “Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee held a hearing Wednesday on new gun control legislation Democrats plan to push on the American people,” he wrote.

“The top Republican on the committee, Doug Collins, R-Ga., asked committee Democrats if I could testify about this legislation in an appropriate setting to offer another perspective as both a survivor of a shooting attack and strong supporter of our Second Amendment rights. But the Democrats said no.”

He added that he would “not be silenced” and had therefore chosen to publish his testimony so that the American people could bypass the stubborn, censorship-loving Democrats and read it for themselves.

Scalise testimony recounts the horrific ordeal he suffered two years ago when a deranged left-wing zealot opened fire at a congressional baseball practice in Virginia, injuring six people, including him. In fact, the congressman almost died because of the injuries he sustained.

It then notes that while he appreciates the Democrats’ intentions vis-à-vis their gun control legislation, the facts show their legislation would solve nothing.

“[T]hese new gun control measures being proposed in H.R. 8 would not have prevented any number of recent mass violence events. … Instead, whether intentionally or not, the gun control proposals in H.R. 8 could turn law abiding citizens into criminals while also failing to achieve the stated purpose of reducing gun violence,” his testimony reads.

Falsely known as the the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019 — there’s nothing bipartisan about prohibiting a Republican mass shooting victim from testifying — the Democrats’ legislation would “require unlicensed firearms sellers to run would-be buyers through the same national background check system that licensed gun sellers now must use,” according to Pacific Standard.

But as noted by Scalise, such a rule would do nothing to temper the black market distribution of firearms. Using facts and statistics, he points out that “most criminals obtain firearms through unlawful means” and that the addition of more background check laws has not been shown to reduce gun violence.

What does reduce help reduce unnecessary gun deaths? A well-armed populace.

“Every single month in America, law-abiding citizens with concealed carry permits defend themselves and others against criminals who have guns,” his testimony continues.

“For example, on January 8th, a man approached a 25-year-old woman in Chicago, displayed a weapon, and attempted to rob her at a bus stop. The woman had a concealed carry permit. She drew her own weapon and fired a shot, killing the armed robber. The owner of a nearby pharmacy said such violence happens ‘all over’ Chicago. However, in this case, the intended victim was able to defend herself with her own gun.”

HERE’S WHAT YOU’RE MISSING …

The testimony concludes with Scalise admitting that the only reason he’s alive today is because of the “immediate response of my Capitol Police detail, and the Alexandria Police Department.”

Here’s the key, though: “Most victims of gun violence do not have law enforcement already on the scene to respond to a violent gunman,” which is why protecting their Second Amendment rights is so essential.

“Instead of making it harder for citizens to defend themselves until law enforcement arrives, Congress should consider legislation like H.R. 38, the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act, a bill that would help law-abiding citizens have the same tools to defend themselves as a criminal has of trying to inflict harm, regardless of where they travel,” the testimony concludes.

“I firmly believe we must never forget, nor minimize, the importance of the Second Amendment to our Constitution. H.R. 8, as well as other new gun control legislation currently being considered by the House Democrat majority do not accomplish the goal of reducing gun violence.”

It’s just too bad Democrats never got to hear this wisdom because, well, they preferred behaving like this instead:
